TL;DR
Mile Tally stores everything on your iPhone.
We collect nothing. We have no servers.
The app makes no network calls without your action.
What data the app handles
On the device
Mile Tally stores the following in a local SwiftData database on your iPhone: trip date and time, distance, category, purpose label, the IRS standard mileage rate at the time of the trip, and any notes you author. Trips you log manually live in the same database.
Permissions used
- Motion (CoreMotion). Used to detect when you start driving so the app can ask if you want to log a trip. Motion samples are processed on-device and discarded.
- Notifications (UNUserNotificationCenter). Used to send the "looks like you're driving" prompt. No remote push notifications.
- Location (Core Location, "When In Use" only). Used to record trip distance while a drive is in progress. Mile Tally never requests "Always" location.
Data discarded immediately
Raw GPS coordinates are discarded the moment a trip ends — only the trip's total distance is saved. Motion samples are not retained. There is no map view in the app because there is no map data to show.
What data the app sends off the device
Nothing automatic.
- Exports. When you export a CSV or PDF, the file is handed to the iOS share sheet. The destination — email, Files, AirDrop, Messages — is chosen by you. Mile Tally is not in that path.
- Purchases. Mile Tally Pro is sold through Apple's StoreKit. Apple handles the transaction. Mile Tally receives a receipt that confirms entitlement; it contains no personal information.
What we don't do
- No accounts, sign-in, or email collection
- No analytics SDKs (Google Analytics, Firebase, Mixpanel, Amplitude — none)
- No third-party crash reporting SDKs that transmit data
- No advertising identifiers (IDFA)
- No data sales, brokering, or aggregate sharing
- No "Always" location permission
- No iCloud or CloudKit sync in v1
Children's privacy
Mile Tally is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them. Since the app collects no data, this is structurally true.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will change with it, and the next app update will note the change in its release notes. There is no mailing list to add or remove yourself from — we don't have one.
